FAQs

Your frequently asked questions about heat pump chillers, answered.

A heat pump chiller is a versatile component of a thermal management system that can provide heating and/or cooling by transferring heat from one place to another. It operates on the principle of the refrigeration cycle, using a refrigerant to absorb heat from a source (such as air, water, or ground) and then releasing it to another medium. Heat pump chillers are commonly used in commercial and industrial applications to efficiently manage temperature control.

  • Heat Recovery (Heating while cooling): Heat pumps with heat recovery capabilities are an efficient method for heating while cooling, as they recycle waste heat generated during the cooling process.
  • Heat Pump (Heating or cooling): Heat pumps with or without an option for a reversing valve can offer heating or cooling.
  • Multi-Pipe (Any combination): Heat pumps with 4 or 6 pipes enable heating, cooling, or both at the same time as thermal loads fluctuate, allowing you to control to a leaving hot water and cold water setpoint simultaneously.

A chiller with heat recovery can still be referred to as a heat pump chiller.

A traditional heat pump can reverse the refrigeration cycle by utilizing a reversing valve to switch between heating and cooling modes.  A heat pump chiller with heat recovery is designed to recover waste heat generated during the cooling process and repurpose it for heating applications.  The chiller does this by capturing the heat that would otherwise be expelled to the environment during the cooling process and uses it to heat water or air for other uses.

In summary, while a heat pump chiller with a reversing valve can switch between heating and cooling modes, a heat pump chiller with a heat recovery option captures and reuses waste heat generated during the cooling process to provide heating, helping to enhance overall energy efficiency.
